Yes.

This game and the way I'm running it is newbie friendly. Because you will all know as much as your characters (when we begin). Absolutley nothing.

Which also means no reading required =)

Everything should be explained slowly in game. So you (the player) will learn it all as your PC learns it all.

Nice setup, eh?

Sounds good to me. Will I need to type? Is there some way we can rig a microphone so I can just talk to you guys.

Also if you can pop over and pour diet coke into my mouth whenever we're playing, that'd be cool too.

Cheers.

Alright. The first thing you all need to do is come up with a basic group idea you can all work with/are happy with.

There's little point everyone going off independantly and making PCs because they might not work at all together.

It's great me getting a muslim assassin, french knight, scanadavian hunter and a prussian merchant, but in theory it doesn't work together at all and would cause me unlimited balls ache, probably enough balls ache that my enthusiasm would quickly drain.

To make sure the game actually works - and long term too - the PCs need to be capable of quite easily meeting each other, entering the rough same circles and not immediately be at odds due to religion or culture.

Once they've initially met up and things have moved along a little, I couldn't care less how they develope, as long as there isn't a big PC war.

The sort of things to be decided is..

1. Rough religion of the group - Pagan, Muslim, Christian basically

2. Geographical area

I'll give you all sometime to come to some form of compromise, I don't expect you all to manage this, so I'll give it a little bit before I force a geographical location upon the group. The location mostly sorts out the religion anyway.

It will likely be France if you can't make up your minds. But that also allows spanish, germanic, italien, polish and england etc PCs.

Starting date will be 1146. Look up the time period on wikipedia is you know nothing about it and have some time.

A few things of interest to look up maybe.

Crusades.
France/Italy/Venice/Holy Roman Empire - Whatever is appriopriate.
Any profession or group related to your PC I.E. Inquisition, Crusaders (knight templars, teutonic knights etc), catholic church etc.

I think that's about it for now. Look forward to seeing the bizarre collection of a french poet, an egyptian assassin, a leper beggar and the King of Norway.

France is the most powerful nation in Europe. The monarch in England is French. They speak French in England.

Get used to it =)

English peasants still do talk English though.

Also, to add, it doesn't mean EVERYONE has to be christian crusaders, but crusaders were generally nobility. Thus you'd be a noble one way or another, thus you have picked a class to belong to.

Norman. Not French.

William the Conqueror was absolutely 100% NOT French. He is descended from already strong ties with the Normans, being as King Edward the Confessor is the son of Emma, daughter of the Duke of Normandy.

In the modern day this may seem like a petty distinction, however in the politics of the period it was very important. They don't even speak proper French, but Anglo-Norman, their own particular dialect.

If they had been actually French, then all the wars with France (100 years war, Agincourt etc) would not have taken place.

Stephen of Blois is the current King of England (1135-1154) and was born in France. Thus he is French.

Yeah, he is the last "Norman King of England" but Normandy is in France as well, so it's basically French.

It doesn't matter too much though. I don't plan on trying to be 100% accurate with history (unless it's an important detail for a part of a stoy), because that would require far too much reading of wikipedia.

Anyway. Stephen is succeeded by Henry II in 1154 whom is French. So, whilst 8 years out, the statement stands.

The Duchy of Normandy isn't France.

King Stephen and even Henry II may have been French (arguable Norman) but House Plantaganet was NOT the ruling house of France.

Henry II is:

King of England (11541189), Count of Anjou, Duke of Normandy, Duke of Aquitaine, Duke of Gascony, Count of Nantes, Lord of Ireland

but never King of France.

He is Norman by descent, great grandson of William the Conqueror through his mother, the Empress Maude and is the first of the Plantaganet Kings, whilst France is (and has been for several hundred years) ruled by the Capetian Dynasty and in 1135 that means Louis VI.

It's important to know that they are two separate nations, with separate Kings and Nobility, which is the top and bottom of what I am trying to make clear. England is NOT part of France, it's people are speaking olde English in the main, the nobility speaking Anglo-Norman.

And the International Language is of course Latin.

Does...does it really matter who was on the throne in England? Unless the game setting is gunna be there, it doesn't sound like it super matters.

Also, if I wanted 100% historical accuracy, I'd buy and read the history textbooks I'm supposed to have for class. Let's keep it fun?

I'm not splitting hairs. I'm just saying England has never, was never, and I hope will never be French. Simple fact. A fact I will defend with every fibre of my being.

I don't care about 100% accuracy, but I care about accuracy rather than being completely wrong.

Re: Vampire the Masquerade 3.0 - Dark Ages -> Future

Post by Tromador on 27th January 2009, 11:46 pm

France (or what we think of as Modern Day France) is a very fluid area around this time period.

From this map (1100AD) we can see that England (in yellow) extends to the Duchy of Normandy. Additionally, Brittany, Toulouse, Anjou, Provence, Guyenne and Blois are all separately governed counties/duchies, some of which admittedly are vassal states to the French throne.

By the end of the 12th century, the map has radically changed. From this map (1200AD) we can see that England now extends down as far as modern Spain and has absorbed Brittany, Anjou, Guyenne and a large chunk of French territory.

Another nice map shows us in some detail how this absorption occurs, commencing with Henry II who is already Count of Anjou (by inheritance from his father) in 1146 and a few years later absorbs Aquitaine upon his marriage to Eleanor in 1152 making him the most powerful vassal in France. When he accedes to the English throne in 1154 he actually becomes more powerful then the French King. This then remains status quo until France reclaims Aquitaine in 1337 triggering the 100 years war.

All of which may or may not be of interest, but it fascinates me hugely as it's a wonderfully intriguing beginning to the backdrop which leads eventually to Henry V and thereupon into the Wars of the Roses (which is the period I used to do re-enactments for).

So that's what's happening politically. England is expanding by peaceful absorption of about half of what is Modern-day France.

I have no problem with playing in "France", but lets do it right. Accept that what we think of as France simply doesn't apply in the 12th Century. Furthermore, they don't all speak French. In southern France, they probably speak Occitan aka Provencal (still to this day the first language of perhaps 1.5 million people). Near Modern Belgium, they are speaking Flemish, Arpitan towards Modern Day Switzerland, Breton in Brittany etc etc etc.. and all the dialects. Old French (which evolves into Modern French) is spoken in most of the North.

Educated people in the region may well have Old French as a second language, along with Latin. Latin is what binds Christian Europe together through the overarching authority of the Church.

well, trom appears to be all over the historical record, must admit that the sweeping statements about england being france and everyone speaking french didnt seem quite right. still, tho, zerts point is good, some accuracy is preferable in RPGs but we shouldnt lose sight of the fun aspect. Smile

which leads me on to the general proposition,

iain already knows im up for this as ive already got the bones of a character on the off chance an opportunity comes up to play. it sounds grand, dont care which rules system, seeing as i know little about any on offer. simple is best imo.

however, my main point is that it seems we have dropped into one of our phases of talking endlessly about new campaigns, new games new PC's, etc etc and not actually playing any.

id advise against getting too carried away with making PCs for a game thats over 6 months away. seeing as we havent even started ravenloft yet that is. PCs made and left on the shelf ifor long periods in my experience end up getting changed for something else in the end.

As I've indicated my time is up in the air at the moment, which is fine for tossing it off at work reading websites and rambling on about 12thC history, but not so great for playing time.

I suggest you move along without me for now, maybe play Ravenloft, or carry on with the current D&D, until my schedule is a bit more organised and I can rejoin.

Re: Vampire the Masquerade 3.0 - Dark Ages -> Future

Post by ^^Truth on 28th January 2009, 12:21 pm

I said the King of England is French and that they speak French in England, a selection of the board seems to have decided that this means something completely different.

Merchants and nobility in England use French and Latin to conduct business, that's how it is.

This game. I mean. Dunno.

It's as far away as it is me learning the vampire TM rule system and changing it so that it "feels right". Which could potentially be a while and potentially be tomorrow (and/or finding it's absolutely shit, but there are some bits I like and I've tested so far).

I have to play the system, get a feel for what is "right" and what is "wrong" then change what I don't like, once that is all done and it's been simplified (several ways I already have an idea of) then I can introduce it to online play and not before then.

If I knew the rules, I could run this shit tomorrow (or not tomorrow cos I'm busy until next Tuesday minimum), but I don't yet, although with the general luster I put into my mini-projects, I don't envisage it actually being very long until I am actually ready to go.

But this also depends on you all aswell, having PCs ready and the like. I have anyway found and thought of a very, very good way for everyone to record and store their PCs, but I'll get to that at a later date.

Mike is though correct. Generally if you make PCs FAR too early for a game, they won't last, but then that is HIS way of doing things and not anyone elses. If people think they'll be happy, please look into making something, I can provide all the rules and materials necessary to do so (in a reasonably simple format. Reasonably).

Regardless.

Mike. Perhaps it would be handy if you were to write up the basic gist of what you had in mind (as it were) for your own PC, because while everyone here maybe happy to default to the next man out of politeness, someone needs to lay down some rules and if not you lot (the players), it will be me.

Anyway.

Which-way and whatever.

No, you dumbwick.

You can play roles of high-importance, that isn't a problem, the correct "background" traits need to be purchased is all. But anyone "named" as it were, is naturally off-limits.

And while you were joking, just wanna say that, the power the Pope possesses is off-limits with the system anyway.
